Driving into Aberdeen earlier this week, I took the opportunity to stop and take a picture looking out towards the lighthouse. This is Girdle Ness Lighthouse out in the distance and it was built in 1833 by Robert Stevenson. Kinnaird Head Lighthouse, which featured in one of my blogs earlier this year, was also built by Robert Stevenson.
Girdle Ness Lighthouse is located at the south end of the harbour and it has quite a unique design in the fact that it had 2 lights within the same tower. The 2 lights were fixed and one was above the other. The bottom light was discontinued back in 1890 but you can clearly still see where this light used to be. The tower is 37m high and there are 182 steps to the top.
For those who fancy a walk out to get a better view of it and out towards the sea, there is a short walk around the lighthouse. You will also be able to see Torry Battery which was built to defend the harbour in 1860.
